Preventive Dentistry Q & A

What is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry refers to treatments designed to maintain the health of your teeth. In addition to proper oral care at home and regular dental visits, Dr. Shuster provides care to prevent the occurrence of:

  • Cavities
  • Gingivitis
  • Enamel loss
  • Periodontitis

What is Periodontal Disease Treatment?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) occurs due to poor oral care. There are a few treatment methods that can keep the periodontal disease at bay. These include:

  • Scaling and root planing (a deep-cleaning method to remove plaque)
  • Medications used with treatment (not an alternative to surgery)
  • Surgery (e.g. flap surgery and bone and tissue grafts)

What are Digital X-Rays?

Digital X-rays can detect signs of cavities between teeth and problems below the gum line, thus Dr. Shuster uses them to examine parts of your mouth that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

It’s a non-invasive procedure that takes images from the outside of your mouth, using digital X-ray sensors to observe its interior structure.

What are Sealants?

Sealants protect teeth from decay. They’re thin composite coatings that Dr. Shuster applies to the chewing surfaces of your rear-most teeth to form a protective shield over their enamel.

Sealants can last up to ten years with regular dental check-ups. Dr. Shuster periodically examines the coating to make sure it’s not chipped or worn down.

What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer — cancer of the mouth — can be life threatening without early diagnosis and treatment. Like all cancers, it involves the abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells that affect the surrounding tissue. Risk factors for oral cancer include:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Family history of cancer
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Although genetic cases of oral cancer might be inevitable, some measures can help prevent non-genetic cases from developing:

  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Follow a well-balanced diet plan
  • Limit your exposure to the sun and wear sun protective lotions on your skin and lips

Dr. Shuster checks for oral cancer during every visit. During these appointments, she also shows you what to look for on your own time.

What is DIAGNOdent™?

The DIAGNOdent pen is a tool used to detect tooth decay. Using this instrument, Dr. Shuster can identify fissure caries, proximal caries, and periodontitis concerns.

The DIAGNOdent pen is especially effective in pit and fissure areas when the exterior surface seems to be in good condition.

What are Night Guards?

Grinding and clenching can be extremely damaging to your teeth. It tends to occur with stress and happens overnight when you’re not aware of it. Grinding can also lead to face pain, chronic jaw pain, and jaw damage.

Night guards prevent grinding and clenching and correct the positioning of your teeth. Dr. Shuster can take impressions of your teeth and create a customized night guard to protect them.

What are Occlusal Guards?

An occlusal guard is a type of night guard that prevents your teeth from grinding and clenching. You can also wear it during the day if you have a serious grinding condition. Like night guards, occlusal guards are removable and are custom made to fit and protect your teeth.

Dr. Shuster can identify signs of teeth grinding and clenching through regular dental visits, so schedule a visit to Academy Dental Care today.
