Restorative Dentistry Q & A

What are Bridges and Crowns?

Crowns and bridges are common restorative procedures. Crowns are used to cover or “cap” teeth that have been damaged or seriously decayed. Academy Dental Care uses custom ceramic crowns, designed to last for years.

Dr. Shuster creates custom crowns to blend in seamlessly with your smile, making teeth stronger and more functional than before. Crowns can:

  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a tooth that has had a root canal
  • Cover a broken or fractured tooth
  • Cover a weak tooth to prevent fracturing
  • Replace a filling in a tooth with severe decay
  • Improve the look of a misshapen tooth

For patients replacing several missing teeth, bridges fill the gap and crowns are used to anchor them in place for a durable, long-lasting fit.

What are Dentures and Partials?

For centuries, people have used dentures to replace missing teeth. Today’s dentures are more natural, durable, and easier to care for than the dentures your grandparents might have worn. Dentures differ from crowns and bridges because they are removable. They are taken out for cleaning or while sleeping.

Full dentures are prosthetics that replace a complete row of teeth. Partials replace a few teeth, allowing healthy teeth to remain in place. Dentures are custom-made from impressions taken at either of Academy Dental Care’s Northern Jersey offices.

Eating and talking with dentures may feel a bit awkward at first, but in time they will eventually feel real. Dr. Shuster believes every patient should have dentures that are comfortable, functional, and attractive.

What are Tooth Colored Fillings?

If you’ve had cavities filled at some point in your life, it was probably done with silver-colored amalgam fillings. These fillings are highly effective in replacing tooth structure destroyed by decay, but their noticeably dark appearance can have a grave effect on your smile.

At Academy Dental Care, Dr. Shuster offers composite resin fillings that have a tooth-colored appearance that blends in with your existing teeth. These fillings are ideal for the following situations:

  • Your existing filling is old, worn, and at risk of coming out
  • Your filling is causing fracturing
  • Your filling is allowing leakage of saliva, food, and bacteria
  • Your traditional filling is affecting your smile

Replacing your filling with a tooth-colored filling is a quick and easy process that will leave your smile brighter and your teeth stronger.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are another great option to give patients a bright, beautiful smile. Veneers are very thin layers of porcelain applied to the front of teeth to correct a variety of issues. Applying veneers is painless and is a great alternative to more invasive dental work.

Veneers can even be used as “instant orthodontics” to correct gaps and minor misalignments. They are stain-resistant and highly-durable, lasting up to 15 years. Countless numbers of Academy Dental Care’s patients have enhanced their smiles with veneers.

Before receiving veneers, Dr. Shuster makes sure that you have no major underlying dental issues that need to be resolved first.

What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is necessary when the tooth’s root becomes infected due to tooth decay. A root canal procedure can save the tooth by:

  • Removing the decayed part of the tooth
  • Cleaning out the infected pulp from the root
  • Sealing the canal
  • Covering the tooth with a filling or crown

Good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and cleanings to help detect decay early are the best ways to avoid ever needing root canal treatment.

What are Composite Resins?

In order to provide the most natural looking smile, Dr. Shuster uses fillings made out of composite resin. This material is a tooth-colored mixture of plastic and glass that’s a popular and durable option for restoring teeth.

Dr. Shuster believes in the importance of aesthetics when it comes to dental procedures. She uses composite resins to match tooth color and restore the shape of a damaged tooth to match the rest of your teeth and create a seamless smile.
